SP5 Edward A. Barlow was assigned to the 366th Aviation Support Detachment, 165th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade.  "The Oasis" was located at Thanh An, about 24 kilometers sout-southwest of Pleiku.  On 11 Nov 1969 it was occupied by Headquarters, 3rd Brigade, 4th Infnatry Division, and a variety of troop elements.

Shortly after midnight on thte night of 10/11 May 1969 the Oasis was struck by a battalion of North Vietnamise Army (NVA) troops.  The attack occurred against the defensive perimeter manned by soliders from the 366th Aviation Support Detachment, an air traffic control unit.  SP5 Edward Barlow (Hebron, KY) and SP4 Malcom Bell (Milligan, FL) were in a defensive bunker hit by a rocket-propelled grenade near the outset.
