Service to Scholars Peer Sponsorship Program

Service to Scholars Peer Sponsorship Program

The EKU Service to Scholars Peer Sponsorship program is a volunteer program designed to provide assistance and support to incoming student veterans transitioning from military service to college life, by connecting them with other experienced student veterans who have “walked the walk” recently, and want to help others do the same successfully.

Any new, admitted servicemember or separated veteran can request to be assigned to a Peer Sponsor. Peer sponsorship can be renewed for a second semester, if needed, and is available to both on-campus and online students. Sponsor assignments are based upon availabilty, and are on a first-come, first serve basis.

To serve as a Service to Scholars Peer Sponsor, students must have earned a minimum of 24 credit hours at EKU, and must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Here are some general guidelines and expectations for both parties.

Sponsored Veterans

  1. Make a list of questions that you would like to ask your peer sponsor.  Talk to your sponsor about who to contact if you have questions they cannot answer. Arrange a time when you and your sponsor can meet face-to-face on campus.
  2. Take a campus tour with your sponsor. Key places to know are: Whitlock Building, EKU VETS Office, Public Safety, Library, Wellness Centers, Powell Building, and where to find your advisor. If possible, go off campus and explore Richmond with your peer sponsor.
  3. Take advantage of your sponsor’s knowledge of EKU and the “ins and outs” of higher education. Ask questions about other VA benefits they might be using, best instructors, etc.
  4. Stay in contact; meet for coffee, park and walk to class together, call to ask questions or report on your progress.
  5. Get involved on campus through a student organization such as the EKU VETS Club, Omega Delta Sigma, or any of the clubs, intramural sports teams, etc. offered through Student Life.
  6. Be patient! Sponsors are students too, and they may not have experienced the same situation you are facing. If they do not know, feel free to contact the EKU VETS office for advice.

On-Campus Sponsors

  1. Initiate the first contact by calling the incoming student veteran, preferably before they arrive on campus. If you get a voice mail, ask them to call back at a specific time when you know you will be available. If you do not hear back, continue to make contact by all available means. Arrange for a face-to-face meeting on campus once they arrive.
  2. Take the incoming student veteran on a tour of the campus if needed (give them a campus map!) and, if possible, show them around Richmond.  Share your knowledge of what’s where, where to go for assistance, places to shop, eat, live, etc. Offer assistance as appropriate.
  3. Maintain regular contact with your sponsored veteran, preferably face-to-face at least once a week. The EKU VETS Center is a great place on campus to meet.  If there is a problem, refer the student veteran to the appropriate campus resource. Always ask about academic progress and offer encouragement or suggestions for finding help if needed. You can always refer students to the Veterans Academic Advisor.
  4. Participate together in EKU VETS activities or recreational programming opportunities when possible.
  5. Care about your sponsored veteran’s success!  Be available and reliable.

Online Sponsors

  1. Initiate the first contact by calling or emailing the incoming student veteran, preferably before classes begin. If you do not hear back, continue to make contact by all available means. Arrange for a Zoom meeting as soon as possible.
  2. Share your knowledge and experience with online classes, and valuable resources available to online students at EKU. Offer assistance as appropriate.
  3. Maintain regular contact with your sponsored veteran, preferably face-to-face on Zoom at least once a week. If there is a problem, refer the student veteran to the appropriate campus resource. Always ask about academic progress and offer encouragement or suggestions for finding help if needed. You can always refer students to the Veterans Academic Advisor.
  4. Participate together in virtual EKU VETS activities or recreational programming opportunities when possible.
  5. Care about your sponsored veteran’s success!  Be available and reliable.
